Apple testing a 1.5-inch OLED screen for iWatch?

Reports on Monday reignited the interest in Apple Watch project for the first time in a little while, claiming the company wants a 1.5-inch display for the wearable smart watch.

A report in the Taiwanese Economic Times says Apple has been testing an OLED touch display for the watch, which has been rumoured for launch later this year.

Earlier reports had suggested that Apple had preferred a 1.8-inch display, which could be manufactured by RITEK, but has now settled on the smaller size.

Also on Monday, a second report shined light on rumours that Apple’s key assembly partner Foxconn has already been given the green light to prepare for production.

The article said the Chinese firm had been asked to create a small run of around 1,000 units, which would suggest Apple is simply looking to trial the device at this stage, prior to a full run.

Speculation surrounding the iWatch has dampened down a little in recent weeks, with attention turning to the possibility of an iPhone 5S/iPhone 6, new iPads and the new iOS 7 operating system.

The launch of an iWatch would give Apple a foothold in the oncoming wearable tech onslaught, kickstarted by gadgets like the Pebble Smartwatch and, of course, the Google Glass wearable specs.

The device would almost certainly communicate with iOS devices, allowing users to read notifications, stay in touch with social networks, read emails, view directions, control media and much much more.

Would it be too much to ask for a launch at WWDC? We’ve less than a month to wait to find out for sure.
