We’ve long known that Apple is developing an augmented reality (AR) headset, with a view to launching it in 2020, but now it’s emerged that the unit – codenamed T288 – will also have virtual reality (VR) capabilities built in.
Before we dive into the details, let’s highlight the differences between AR and VR; the former maps digital objects onto the real world (think: Pokémon Go), while the latter immerses users into a digital environment (think: Ready Player One).
Now you’re armed with that information, we’re ready to proceed.
CNET revealed on April 27 that Apple is working on a headset, which is driven by an in-house 5nm chipset that’s more powerful than anything on the market, that will afford users the option to switch between AR and VR with the click of a button.
The unit is said to be equipped with two high-resolution 8K screens – one in each viewing port – and a new wireless tech that allows it to connect to a nearby control box, which does all the technical heavy lifting, without the need for a wire.

That’s not to mean the T288 will be completely wireless, though. Powering a pair of 8K screens and a number of other power-hungry components requires an awful lot of juice, so it’s safe to assume the headset will have a tethered power cable.
Apple is expected to take the wraps off the T288 in 2020. There’s a chance, however, that it could alter its plans or even scrap them altogether – something to consider if you’re thinking about holding out for the unit.
