Apple rumoured to be readying 68 million iPhone 6 units for launch

Apple’s first wave of iPhone 6s will be comprised of a whopping 68 million units according to a report by a Taiwanese publication.

Taiwan’s Business Weekly writes that the initial production order for the iPhone 6 will be far in excess of that of previous iPhones with 68 million units to be prepped.

Apple ‘only’ sold nine million iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C units in their first weekend of release, demonstrating quite how breezy this 68 million figure could make the stock situation come the iPhone 6 launch day.

Compared to Sony’s rather stock-scarce launch of the PS4, Apple is quite good at providing enough stock for its fans at or around launch day, but there are reasons to question these latest rumours. 

They come from sources within the Apple supply chain, which is a fractured thing at best. There’s also no mention of the new reported split in the iPhone line-up.

While anything but official, reports suggest we’ll see two new kinds of iPhone this year, both with a footprint quite different to the current iPhone 5S.

A 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is expected to be joined by a larger 5.5-inch version. With different screen sizes and different resolutions, it would mark the most significant hardware change since the series’s inception.

This may also be considered the first generation of iPhone not to be guided by the hand of Steve Jobs, the former Apple CEO who died in 2011. However, reports from April 2013 suggest that Jobs was working on iPhone 6 prototypes before his death three years ago.

The iPhone 6 is expected to launch this September, with invites to the launch likely to appear two weeks before it takes place. We have a month left in the dark, but we’re almost there.
