Apple PrimeSense patents include iTV features

Apple’s recent acquisition of PrimeSense means that it has taken on all of the company’s patents, which include some that could be applied to a future Apple iTV.

PrimeSense describes their technology as something that will “revolutionise the TV experience” and can be directly integrated into TVs, set-top boxes and media streamers in the future.

“Via our partnerships with leading consumer electronics and content brands, PrimeSense is bringing naturally interactive entertainment and remote control-free interfaces to homes everywhere. We’re giving new life to home entertainment”, explains the company.

Its 3D User Interface patent has already been granted and outlines processing functions that uses a processor integrated within a display in a TV, or any other “suitable sort of computerised device”, including a game console or media player.

It would be able to read eye movements and hand gestures to navigate the dashboard of the TV, using an Xbox Kinect-like device.

Apple itself has patents pending that relate to remote control-free TV experiences, including one on Gaze Detection technology, an area that PrimeSense is already familiar with having worked on the Xbox 360 Kinect.

Other PrimeSense patents include some that could further Apple’s iOS in the Car technology in the coming years. PrimeSense’s natural interaction systems is outlined in a patent and details technology that adjusts the car’s mirrors according to the driver’s head position.

The newly Apple-owned company also filed a patent for an interactive 3D video display system with a wearable monitor. Within the introduction for this patent, PrimeSense outlined that natural user interfaces are becoming more popular in the computer and entertainment industries.

It states that gesture controls are becoming a strong supplement or replacements for the more conventional navigation systems like mice, keyboards, remote controls or game controllers.

PrimeSense technology has been used in groundbreaking technology like Xbox Kinect, and could soon be seen in new product categories from Apple, such as TVs and wearable devices.
