Apple Planning iPhone ‘nano’ ?

Smaller and cheaper version claimed to be in the pipeline.

Once the iPhone was launched Stateside all talk would obviously then head in two distinct directions: 1. Details of launches elsewhere and 2. Additional iPhone models. Time for the latter…

JP Morgan analyst Kevin Chang is the rumour churner this time around having stated that Apple is indeed planning to “launch a cheaper version of the iPhone in the fourth quarter that could be based on its iPod nano music player”.

Chang claims his info is solid citing unnamed sources “in the supply channel” and also references the now-famed May patent by Apple for a device with a full touch screen front and clickwheel on the back (illustrations from which above).

The issue – as is always the case with reports like this – is that one man’s trusted anonymous source runs headlong into many people’s rampant cynicism. Besides even the most well intentioned insider sometimes ends up having no idea what they’re talking about

On the other hand a cheaper iPhone model would make a great deal of sense while everything iPod (anyone remember that brand?) is well overdue an upgrade…

”’Update:”’ No sooner were these words said than JP Morgan has retracted them. It has however made the bold prediction that a 3G iPhone will launch sometime in 2008… well, ”Duh!”
