Streaming services have generally been devoid of underground mixes – but not anymore.
Apple has announced a partnership with music firm Dubset to offer mixed and remixed content on Apple Music.
It’s all thanks to the launch of MixBANK, a “clearance and distribution platform” for underground DJ music, which will be delivered via Apple Music.
Previously, streaming services were unable to offer remixed content because of the difficulties in licensing.
However, Dubset uses software to identify the copyrighted music within a mix or remix, and clears the use of that music through the “appropriate labels and publishers”.

“This is a very important day for the music industry,” says Stephen White, Dubset CEO. “Until now the major music services could not offer DJ mixes and unofficial remix content in their services.”
“Although DJs were able to sample tracks during live performances, they were not allowed to legally distribute the recordings,” explains White. “Most of this content has lived in the shadows of unlicensed pirate distribution channels with neither the original artist, composer, or the DJ getting compensated for their creative work.”

The remixed content goes live on Apple Music today, and DJs and content remixers can apply to Dubstep to have music featured on the service.
“This is a huge step forward for DJs and dance music culture,” says legendary DJ Tiesto. “Delivering remix content to Apple Music through Dubset is an amazing development.”
The move could see fans of remixed content now opt for Apple Music over music services that have a more traditional offering like Spotify or TIDAL.
