Apple Making 4-inch iPhone 5 as Well as a New “Mini” iPad?

The inevitable Apple rumour mill continues to grind but it is looking increasingly likely that the iPhone 5 will sport a bigger 4in screen.

Reports this week from Reuters and the Wall Street Journal both say that three display makers in the Far East are gearing up for production starting in June for the new iPhone screen and that its size is larger than before.

The WSJ story suggests it’s “at least 4in” while Reuters’ source claims it’s exactly 4in. Either way that’s a significant size boost over previous generations and matches the trend established by the popular rival Samsung Galaxy S range, which has grown from 4in with the original Galaxy S model through to 4.8 with the new Galaxy S3.

Apple could also be shrinking down the iPad with a new “mini” version. Its display is rumoured to be 7.85in from corner to corner. Taiwan’s Liberty Times newspaper (via 9to5 Mac) claims that LG and AU Optronics are both working on new displays of that size for Apple, with production targeting the second half of 2012.

A circa-8in iPad launching before Christmas (and ahead of any fourth-gen full size model in 2013) would help refresh the product line and compete with the likes of the 7in Kindle Fire and “phablets” such as the 5.3in Samsung Galaxy Note.

As usual we won’t know for sure until Apple makes any official announcements, which probably won’t happen until the later half of the year.
