Analyst claims Apple’s iPhone 7 is outselling the iPhone 8

Apple’s iPhone 8 is out in the wild and readily available for iOS fans to snap up, only it would appear the iPhone 7 is outselling its predecessor.

At least that’s according to surveys conducted by KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst John Vinh in a client note seen by Reuters.

It’s normally the case that new iPhones sell like hot cakes with people queuing up for hours to get their hands on a box-fresh Apple smartphone. But it would appear the that lack of meaningful upgrades the iPhone 8 offers means Apple fans are holding fire on buying the new handset.

“Many respondents indicated that a meaningful portion of customers are buying iPhone 7 in lieu of the new iPhone 8, given the lack of significant enhancements in the new phone,” said Vinh.

While the iPhone 8 offers the same powerful A11 bionic chipset as the now flagship iPhone X, which makes it suitable for use with augmented reality, there’s little in the way of major upgrades to make the iPhone 8 a must-buy phone over the iPhone 7.

It’s likely that a lot of Apple fans are waiting for the release of the iPhone X with its OLED display, Face ID scanner and dual lens camera, while those that can’t stomach the £999 price tag will likely be looking at the now cheaper but still capable iPhone 7.

“While carriers continue to offer promotions for the new iPhone 8, they have been much more modest compared to the iPhone 7 launch last year,” said Vinh.

With the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S8 with its infinity Display, there’s a chance that Apple’s now rather long in the tooth iPhone 8 design may not cut it with Apple fans any more.
