It seems fair to say that Apple’s HealthKit platform has suffered a couple of false starts in the last month.
The fitness-centric platform, which brings data from third-party apps in to a central Apple-managed hub, was scheduled to launch with iOS 8 on September 17.
However a last minute bug saw Apple pull all third-party health kit apps prior to iOS 8 hitting device owners. The launch of iOS 8.0.1 this week was geared towards bringing HealthKit into the fray, but that software ended up virtually bricking some iPhone 6 devices.
Now, finally, with the arrival of iOS 8.0.2 early on Friday, HealthKit apps are finally hitting the App Store.
The first app on deck is FitPort, which tracks steps, walking and running distance, calories burned actively or dietary, while boy fat percentage can also be calculated using the platform. The £1.49 app is able to glean the health date through the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6’s motion co-processors, or through third-party fitness trackers like the Jawbone UP24.
With a wealth of fitness trackers and apps on the market, Apple’s HealthKit solution is aimed at unifying the experience to give users a clearer, synchronised view of their overall health.
Through HealthKit, apps and trackers will be able to talk to each other and that data can be synced to healthcare providers.
At this summer’s WWDC conference Apple SVP Craig Federighi explained: “Developers have created a vast array of healthcare devices and accompanying applications, everything from monitoring your activity level, to your heart rate, to your weight, and chronic medical conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. You can’t get a single comprehensive picture of your health situation. But now you can, with HealthKit.
“HealthKit provides a single place that applications can contribute to a composite profile of your activity and health.”
