Apple has officially launched a new iOS 6.1 update, with the latest operating system upgrade offering iPhone and iPad users improved LTE support and new iCloud features.

Compatible with the likes of the iPad mini, iPhone 5 and iPad 4, the iOS 6.1 update, which can be added to all Apple devices currently running iOS 6, will see 4G capable smartphone and tablet owners offered new LTE capabilities allowing users to pair their devices with an additional 36 global carriers.

“iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads,” Philip Schiller, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing said.

As well as offering users more widespread 4G LTE connectivity options, the new iOS 6.1 update will see US iPhone 5 and iPad mini owners provided with increased ability to utilise their device’s Siri features to purchase movie tickets. Other new features introduced by the iOS 6.1 update include giving iTunes Match subscribers the ability to download individual songs from iCloud to their iOS devices.

Available as a free update, the new iOS 6.1 update officially launched late last night, January 28, with the new software update available now for a broad selection of Apple’s portable products. Whilst the recently released iPhone 5, iPad mini and iPad 4 have all been given the iOS 6.1 update nod, further iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices are set to make use of the software patch.

Able to be added to the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, iPad 3, iPad 2 and fourth and fifth iPod touch owners are also set to benefit from the iOS 6.1 update.

Predicting the success of the new iOS 6.1 update, Apple’s Philip Schiller has looked back on the success of last year’s iOS 6 release, describing the recent OS overhaul as “the world’s most advanced mobile operating system.

Revealing that iOS users have to date sent more than 450 billion iMessages and uploaded over nine billion pictures to Photo Stream, Schiller stated: “iOS 6 is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, and with nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history.”
