Apple discounts iPad Air 2 following new iPad Pro 9.7 launch

You’ve probably heard about the new iPad Pro 9.7-inch, launched today, featuring most of the tech from the 12.9-inch slate (and a little more) shoved into the original form factor.

It sounds pretty amazing apart from the high price, which starts at £499 ($599) for Wi-Fi with 32GB of storage.

If you think that’s a little too much to be splashing out on a slate, Apple is throwing you a bone in the form of a discounted iPad Air 2 (via Engadget)

The near-perfect tablet will now retail for £349 ($399) for the 16GB model, but £429 ($499) will net you 64GB.

With the launch of a 9.7-inch iPad Pro rather than an iPad Air 3, it leaves the future of the Air range in doubt. The original iPad Air has also been discontinued.

Elsewhere, the Air 2 isn’t the only Apple product to be trimmed today.

As well as announcing a new series of bands for the Apple Watch, the firm also cut the price point.

The Apple Watch will now retail for as low as $299/£259 (down from $349/£299).

We’ve already seen that cut at some retailers prior to the event, which had been mistook for a sign Apple was planning to introduce a second-generation model.

That’s now likely to arrive before the year is out.
