Apple Car: Nvidia employee hired for AI expertise

As a result mounting evidence that Apple is building an electric car – the Apple Car – interest about the company’s new employees has grown.

Apple has hired a former Nvidia employee linked to autonomous vehicles, reigniting speculation about the company’s efforts in the car space.

The new hire is Jonathan Cohen, the director of deep learning for chip-maker Nvidia, as reported by re/code.

Cohen, who formally announced the move on LinkedIn, now states “I build software” for Apple on his profile.

Deep learning is an evolution in artificial intelligence research and development. It involves teaching computers to process patterns found in very large data sets.

According to the report, Nvidia has more recently been using the technique to advance autonomous vehicle technology.

The company’s chips are sold to carmakers, which power various systems involved in motoring autonomy.
