Angry Birds spin-off Bad Piggies to tell the story of the green pigs

Every man and his smartphone-toting mother has heard of Angry Birds, and the massive game franchise is set to get a new spin-off that focuses on those thieving green pigs. Bad Piggies is the name, and it’s coming to a device near you sooner than you think.

Nothing is known about Bad Piggies’s gameplay just yet, but Rovio has dropped hints that it will be a proper departure from Angry Birds’s style of play. “This innovative game turns the franchise on its head by letting the fans play as the pigs,” says the developer, “with all new, never-before-seen gameplay – and not a slingshot in sight!”

So why focus on the villains of the Angry Birds franchise? ““There’s a lot of empathy towards the lovable enemies from the Angry Birds games,” explains Rovio CEO Mikael Hed, “and we’ve been constantly asked: what about the pigs’ side of the story?”

However it plays, Bad Piggies will be launching on September 27 for iOS, Android and Mac. The developer says that Windows Phone and PC versions will follow shortly.

Those green pigs may be borderline illiterate, but it seems they’ve already managed to set up Twitter and Facebook accounts as well as their own website. Take a look for further insights such as “Hello! Oink!” and “Oink! Piggies are tough!”

Developer Rovio has really moved up through the gears in recent times after a long period of seemingly being content to milk the original Angry Birds for all its merchandise-happy worth. Just this year we’ve seen two new games from the Finnish developer.

One was a semi-sequel of sorts called Angry Birds Space, which took the franchise into outer space for a gravity-warping twist on the slingshot-based gameplay. Then there was Amazing Alex – a reworking of an earlier physics-based puzzler that Rovio acquired, gave a lick of paint and re-launched.

Here’s hoping Bad Piggies adds another flavour to the developer’s steadily expanding portfolio.
