Andy Rubin: Essential Phone release date to be revealed next week

In mid-July, Android creator and CEO of Essential Andy Rubin promised his forthcoming Essential Phone would arrive “in a few weeks”.

Well it’s been a few weeks and now we have, not a release date, but a rough idea of when that release date will be announced.

Yes, Andy Rubin has taken to Twitter to reveal that the Essential Phone’s release date will be announced in a week.

It comes following two months of delays, with Rubin also revealing the Android device has now gone into mass production.

The company initially said the phone would start shipping in June, with Rubin claiming the delay was down to getting the handset certified with mobile carriers.

It now seems we can expect to see the phone arriving either at the end of August, or possibly in September, and it’s going to have some tough competition.

Apple is gearing up to announce the iPhone 8, likely next month, and Google is also working on a follow-up to its Pixel phone, the Pixel 2, which is expected to launch in the next few months.

Best Buy and Amazon will be stocking the phone in the US when it launches, with Amazon recently investing in the company.

International carriers are expected to be announced at a later date, but we know the device will cost $699 in the states.

Elsewhere, Essential president Niccolo De Masi spoke to the Wall Street Journal, saying: “If we are able to sell low single digit millions [in the first year], that’s very successful for a startup.”

At this point, we’re still awaiting that concrete release date, but it seems we’ll be finding out more within a week, so stay tuned.
