Android L to be officially dubbed Android Lollipop?

Forget what the Galaxy S6 will look like or when the new iPad Air 2 is coming, what we really want to know is what Android 5.0 will be called.

Fortunately is appears that Google has just offered up a heavy hint, with Android L now widely expected to be formally known as Android Lollipop.

Where has this tease come from? A leaked document? A slip from a high-level executive? Well, no. In fact Google’s latest birthday cake is being cited as the source.

With Google having celebrated its 16th birthday over the weekend, the Mountain View-based giant posted images of a giant birthday cake, topped off by a giant, colourful lollipop.

While this could be a classic case of the tech industry taking two and two and coming up with Nexus 6, the search turn hardware giant’s accompanying comments add further fuel to the fire.

“Today our cake has 16 candles (plus 1 to grow on),” the company wrote.

Android L is expected to be formally detailed next month. With the Nexus 9 tablet tipped for an October 16 unveiling, it is believed Google will launch its latest mobile operating system on the same day.
