One of the key men responsible for the Android OS is looking to make a new smartphone, it’s been claimed.
Andy Rubin is the co-founder and former CEO of Android, Inc., which of course was acquired by Google in 2005 and went on to become the world’s biggest OS. From that time until 2013, Rubin headed up the Android platform for Google.
Now, two and a half years after he stepped down from the position, Rubin is said to be eyeing a return to the platform he helped birth. According to The Information, however, it will be in an entirely different capacity.
The report claims that Rubin is looking to form a smartphone hardware company. More specifically, Rubin is looking to recruit people to help him build a new Android phone.

It’s possible that the new venture will be funded through Rubin’s Playground Fund, which is the startup incubator he set up last year after departing Google for good. Up to now, Rubin has been putting money towards ambitious projects such as AI, but it seems he still sees opportunities in the Android phone market.
There are no further details at this time. Where Rubin intends to fit into this congested market is unclear, but we can’t believe he’d back a standard take on the familiar smartphone format.
