The creator of Android, Andy Rubin, believes that future smart devices will be ruled by only a single super-smart AI.
In news that will no doubt horrify Elon Musk, one of the tech world’s leading moon-shooters has predicted a future run by a single conscious AI.
Andy Rubin is one of the co-founders of Android Inc, which of course was then acquired by Google and (with Rubin’s continued help) turned into the world’s biggest OS. He then ran Google’s robotics efforts before leaving to branch out on his own.
Rubin is well placed to comment on the future of smartphones and AI, then. Speaking at the Bloomberg Tech Conference in San Francisco recently, he did just that.
According to Rubin, AI will be the next major computing platform advance. Backed by advances in quantum computing, says Rubin, artificial intelligence is set for a massive leap in sophistication.
In fact, Rubin believes that the combination of the right AI with quantum computing power could result in just a single all-knowing AI running everything.

“It might not be something you carry around; it just has to be conscious,” said Rubin. Which is simultaneously thrilling and scary, we’re sure you’ll agree.
Elon Musk recently said that he was worried about only one company working in AI, with Rubin’s old company clearly implicated.
