Android Nougat Release Date: Carrier leak reveals August update details for Nexus 6P and 5X

A new leak from Canadian carrier Telus appears to confirm the August release date for Android 7.0 Nougat (formerly Android N). Here’s when you’ll likely be able to download the final version for Nexus devices – and what it might mean for the 2016 HTC Nexus phone and LG’s new V20 handset.

First spotted by 9to5Google on the Telus Forums, the Android 7.0 software update schedule leaves little to the imagination, pinning an August 22 release date on Android Nougat for the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X.

Nougat leak

That fits fairly neatly with previous rumours about Nougat rollout. Renowned mobile leaker Evan Blass, better known by his @evleaks Twitter handle, has previously hinted that the new software might release on Friday August 5, 2016, as part of a security patch for current-generation Nexus devices.

However, popular Android blog Droid Life was quick to point that Blass didn’t say that Nougat would release on August 5 – simply that when it did, it would have the August 5 patch level attached to it.

That said, he did predict an August release for the final version of Nougat, and the chap is disturbingly on point when it comes to all matters mobile.

Droid Life went on to speculate that, based on Google’s current release schedule for Android 7.0 and the fact that it has promised a Q3 arrival for the stable build, Nougat would likely start to roll out to current-gen Nexus devices around August 17.

Rumour has it that the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will be the first phones to get a taste of Nougat, presumably followed by the new 2016 Nexus, which we now think will be unveiled in early-October.

LG is no doubt hoping the latest gossip turns out to be true, because if accurate, it would make the South Korean firm’s V20 smartphone the first handset to ship with Android Nougat out of the box.

We’re likely to learn more about that device in September, likely at IFA 2016.

Of course, if you really can’t wait and have a compatible device, we can tell you how to download Android 7.0 Nougat today.
