Android 5.1 spied again, this time on Google’s Nexus 5

A Nexus 5 handset running the latest Android 5.1 software has turned up on a Geekbench test readout.

The still-unannounced software was listed as the operating system for one of Google’s own smartphones, as noted by TechTastic.nl.

This news follows yesterday’s discovery that two Android One phones launching in the Philippines would be carrying the OS update.

Both of these revelations seem to point to the fact that Google certainly has Android 5.1 ready for stock Android smartphones.

This includes Nexus devices, Android One devices, and Google Play edition smartphones.

Unfortunately, this reveal will likely be to the chagrin of many Android users still desperately awaiting Android 5.0 Lollipop.

As is typical with the fragmented Android platform, OS update rollouts are typically slow and staggered.

This had led to just 1.6 per cent of the total Android user-base (that’s upwards of 1 billion smartphones) actually running Lollipop.

Changes shipping with Android 5.1 are relatively minor, with the update seeing improved Quick Settings, a return of silent mode, and improved battery life and memory usage.

The actual timeframe for the software rollout is still being kept under wraps for now, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do.
