AMD R680, RV620, RV635 Graphic Chips Coming Next Year

Janurary to see yet more graphics options from the green (or is that red) team.

AMD has already launched the 3870 and 3850 and has the whole of its 2000-series on the shelves as well, but it seems that still doesn’t provide enough options for consumers, so come January three more chips will appear under the codenames of R680, RV620 and RV635. As the model numbers may suggest to some, the former of these will slot in above the current HD 3870 XT and the latter two will be coming as replacements for the current mid-range.

More interesting is R680 though, in that it follows in the footsteps of many board partner solutions which bundle two GPU cores onto one PCB, the difference being that this is an AMD approved solution and will be available from a range of different board partners. AMD won’t detail much more than this about the card as yet, except to confirm that it will feature two 55nm cores built on the same specification as RV670 (a.k.a. the 3800-series). And of course there’s the small proviso that it will rely on Crossfire drivers to offer decent performance scaling.

RV620 and RV635, meanwhile, are replacements for the HD 2600 and HD 2400, again built on the new 55nm process. Specs will otherwise be near-identical, which isn’t surprising considering the performance offered by the latest offerings in the lower high-end/higher mid-range and the prices said cards are available at – or at least intended to be were it not for stock problems. Still, as much as we dislike new SKUs for sake of having a new SKU having a bit more choice is always good and who knows, maybe AMD will even be able to usurp nVidia’s 8800 GTX and Ultra from the position they have held for over a year now as the world’s fastest graphics cards.
