Not just wages and headcount dropping.
Exactly on cue and almost certainly in direct response to Intel’s CPU price cuts, AMD appears to have a few of its own. While no official announcement has been made, a look at the usual retailing suspects suggests we should expect one in due course.
Starting from the top, the Phenom II 940 Black Edition, previously retailing at around £220 is now sitting in the region of £190 while the Phenom II 920 has dropped by £30 to around £160.
Across the pond it’s a similar story, with the retail 940 coming down to the 920s price there, too. The implication is that AMD has arranged price drops with its resellers to stay price competitive with Intel’s Core 2 range, but hasn’t yet had time to update its official price list.
In related news, AMD has also announced that it is selling its mobile graphics business (or Imageon as the product is called) to Qualcomm, providers of the CPU inside the Xperia X1, among other smartphones. The deal is worth some $65 million to AMD, apparently. Money the company could definitely do with!
