Amazon Prime Price Hike: US monthly fees go up, is the UK next?

Amazon has pushed up the price of pay-monthly Prime memberships in the United States.

The firm now plans to charge $12.99 per month (up from $10.99) for the privileges, which raises the 12-month total to $155.88.

Amazon isn’t raising the $99 annual fee for Prime membership so this appears to be a drive to push customers onto the yearly tier.

The new charges come into play today for new members, while existing customers will see the price leap in the billing cycle following February 18 (via Geekwire).

What about the UK?

Whether that price hike will be reflected in other Amazon territories like the UK remains to be seen.

The firm charges £7.99 a month or £79 a year for Prime membership in the United Kingdom, which has been the longstanding tariff.

TrustedReviews reached out to the company for clarification and the firm said the hike was US-only right now, but couldn’t comment on future plans.

While the price is going up for US monthly subscribers, Amazon is continuously adding benefits beyond the fast delivery on 100 million products and Amazon Prime video library.

The music library continues to grow, while Prime Reading offers access to thousands of books, comics, magazines, articles and more.

Prime subscribers can store unlimited photos, while Early Access gives members a 30-minute head start on some Lightning Deals.
