Amazon’s rumoured £5 a month Spotify rival may have a massive catch

Amazon is reportedly planning to launch a fully fledged music streaming service to rival the likes of Spotify and Apple Music.

According to Recode sources, the service will be available from just $4 or $5 (likely £4 or £5) a month for some customers.

The catch? That tariff will only be available to owners of the Amazon Echo speaker, which is yet to be officially made available in the UK.

The report indicates those opting for the less expensive tariff would only be able to play their music using the Echo and not independently via a smartphone app.

For those who don’t own the Alexa-powered smart Bluetooth speaker or actually want to listen on something other than that device, the expanded streaming service will reportedly be ad-free at $10 a month.

The streaming service would be an extension of the Prime Music library, which is available as a perk of Prime membership.

That service only offers around a million songs, but the report suggests Amazon will be going all in with a full-on Spotify and Apple Music competitor.

Amazon has reportedly sold over a million Echo speakers, but the discounted offer would still be of limited appeal.

Would you be willing to accept a 50% discount on your streaming subscription and only be able to play on one fair-to-middling Bluetooth speaker?
