Amazon is making a film about the KKK

In a month where race issues have dominated the Hollywood news cycle, Amazon looks set to tackle the sore subject of white supremacy.

Amazon is making a movie about the birth of the Ku Klux Klan, a new report reveals.

The streaming giant is said to have acquired feature film rights to period drama K Troop, which is set in the post-civil war era.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film “chronicles the rise of the KKK in the American South in 1865”, and will focus on the US Army’s anti-KKK troop.

It’s said that actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt will produce the flick, and could “potentially star in” the movie too.

If all goes to plan, Gordon-Levitt will star as Major Lewis Merill, who led K Troop in the 1871 campaign against the KKK.

It’s not easy subject matter to tackle however, especially since a modern incarnation of the KKK still exists – and activiely operates – in the USA today.

The news also comes at a time when race issues plague Hollywood, arriving just days after the widely criticised 2016 Academy Awards were held in Los Angeles.

The Oscars, which took place last Sunday, were reproached for not being sufficiently racially inclusive to African Americans in the film industry.
