Alienware/Dell Ship Laptops With 500GB Storage

Moving part drives challenge flash with sheer brute capacity.

Last I heard 200GB was peak of the laptop storage world – seems like things are once again changing rather rapidly…

Both Dell and its leisure arm Alienware have announced laptops with an incredible 500GB of onboard storage. The logic is easy: 2x 250GB hard drives, but just WHO did it…?

According to the companies’ sites the drives spin along at a nippy 5,400rpm, come equipped with 8MB buffers and have 1.5GBps SATA connectors, but neither description says ”who makes them”! Still, if you want to reap the benefits and aren’t that curious (or are and want to crack the case open) then both the Dell XPS M2010 (above)and Alienware m9700 juggernauts will fulfil your needs.

In related news Dell has also called an end to its once popular Axim X51 handheld computer. Speaking to CNet a company spokesman said “The Axim X51 family is no longer being offered, and we have no plans for a follow-on product at this time.”

Clearly the smartphone has virtually killed off the dedicated pocket PC now, so it remains to be seen just who will junk their lines and who will not take it lying down and make a leap of faith into this new hot arena…

Me, I’d just like to know who makes that 250GB HDD!

”’Update:”’ Samsung makes them! Fujitsu also has 300GBers on the way so get ready for those 600GB laptops!
