Alcatel says no to launching Windows Phone handset

Affordable phone manufacturer Alcatel has confirmed it has no plans to enter the Windows Phone race, instead focusing its efforts on Google’s Android and Mozilla’s Firefox systems.

One of a number of manufacturers rumoured to be plotting new Windows Phone devices as part of a Microsoft-instigated wider push for the mobile OS, Alcatel has refuted such claims, stating that it has no intentions of launching a Windows Phone phone.

We don’t have any clear plans to launch a Windows Phone handset yet,” Dan Dery, Alcatel’s Vice President of Marketing told TrustedReviews.

Despite the Windows Phone OS gaining serious traction in 2013, increasing its share of the smartphone market install base and overtaking the likes of BB10, the platform is still supported primarily by Nokia branded handsets.

Although the likes of the Nokia Lumia 1020 and Nokia Lumia 1520 have given Windows Phone wider appeal, the OS is still struggling to attract new manufacturers.

While Alcatel has turned its back on the Windows Phone platform, the manufacturer has teased that it will launch a new range of Firefox OS devices at MWC 2014, a Barcelona-based show to be held between February 24 and 27.

“There will be a few new devices coming from us that you will see announced in Barcelona together with Mozilla,” Dery told us.

He added: “At MWC you will see more products and more importantly, more differentiation of products.”
