Budget-friendly phone maker Alcatel has showcased its 2018 smartphone line-up at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 in Las Vegas.
Less a selection of individual devices and more an introductions to a trio of phone lines, Alcatel showed off its new universal design language that’s set to feed into all three product lines.
The design is focused around the idea that all its handsets from the Alcatel 5 series flagship through to the lower-end Alcatel 1 will sport 18:9 aspect ratio displays, which have now been adopted by most of the big smartphone flagships.
Smartphones from all three tiers will also share very similar designs so that users wanting an affordable phone won’t need to compromise on what Alcatel calls a “flagship look and feel”.
Alcatel has been slim on the details and differences of the handsets expected in each series, but we suspect the Alcatel 5 Series handsets will sport a full HD+ display and the company said it will come with features such as enabling the handsets to be unlocked by recognising a user’s face. A “large battery” is also touted for the 5 Series phones, which would lead us to suspect the battery packs will have a 3000mAh capacity.
The Alcatel 5 looks to sport a single lens rear camera which is unusual given how dual lens camera arrays are in vogue and the Alcatel 3 Series phone has a dual camera module.
Speaking of which, the 3 Series is also a bit trim on details with Alcatel simply saying it has a “large and high-resolution” display, which will feature in all handsets in the series. The 3 Series also appears to have a much glossier rear finish than the 5 Series.
At the entry-level rung, the Alcatel 1 Series is set to be the most affordable of the phones. sports a unibody chassis and larger bezels that handsets in the other series. It will also come with “higher-end features” which Alcatel notes includes face unlocking.
There’s no word on pricing or release dates, or indeed how many handset each series will have. But this is likely a teaser for CES 2018 with more details expected to be revealed at Mobile World Congress 2018 toward the end of February and the start of March.
