Acer has announced the Acer Iconia Tab 7, a 7-inch Android tablet that doubles as a smartphone.
Much like the Asus Fonepad, the Acer Iconia Tab 7 can also be used to make phone calls and send text messages. Of course, you’ll look a bit silly holding a tablet up to your face, but the option’s there.
While the Iconia Tab 7 accepts a SIM card and acts like a phone, though, it can’t attain 4G LTE speeds. This 3G-only state of affairs is the first sign that we’re dealing with a decidedly entry-level tablet.
Elsewhere, the Acer Iconia Tab 7’s specs bear this out. It features a 7-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display (which is far from being the sharpest) and a low-end 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek CPU. It will come with either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage, as well as a 5-megapixel camera.
The Iconia Tab 7’s anodised silver design could lend it an unusually premium feel, however. One other welcome up-to-date feature is the presence of Android 4.4 KitKat.
As you might expect given these modest specifications, the Acer Iconia Tab 7 is being targeted at developing markets first and foremost, with a bargain basement price tag to suit. Acer claims that the new tablet-phone will launch in Latin America in June, and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa in May.
Prices will start from €149, which works out to about £122.
