A fifth of Britons would pay more for a house with fast internet

As entertainment and services become increasingly reliant on nippy net, UK residents are placing greater importance on their broadband service.

A new survey, courtesy of Halifax, revealed that one in five Britons are now willing to shell out more cash on a home with a fast internet connection.

The study also revealed that 18 per cent of us have already considered internet speed as a factor during previous house moves.

Craig McKinlay, Mortgage Director at Halifax, said: “As superfast broadband is now the norm at work and on our mobile phones, there is a growing expectation that we should be able to enjoy a good broadband connection at home too.”

Alongside outside space, private parking, and good transport links, a strong broadband signal is fast becoming a very significant feature of looking for a new home.

Halifax’s study reckons that 23 per cent of UK citizens would try to haggle down house prices if the internet was too slow.

Earlier this year, Virgin Media launched a new superfast broadband service that promised top speeds of up to 152Mbps.

BT has its own Infinity service, which it reckons can take some customers right up to 300Mbps.

Landlines beware, however – Samsung has managed test environment 5G speeds of up to 7.5Gbps. Blimey…
