8Mbps ADSL For £40 a Month

If you're lucky enough to be close to enabled exchanges you can now get an amazing ADSL download speed of 8Mbps for a reasonable £40 a month.

As we reported last week, you can now get 3Mb and 4Mb Internet connections from cable companies NTL and Blueyonder, at £38 and £50 respectively. Now a company called UK Online has blown that out of the water by offering a connection with a humungous download speed of 8Mb for only £40 a month with a one off installation charge charge of £50. Upload speeds are 400K and the contention ratio is 33:1. The service is called UK Online Broadband 8000.

The service is available to the 230 exchanges around the UK that are EasyNet LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) exchanges. This means that the Internet Service Provider (ISP) EasyNet has its own equipment installed at the local exchange that is not owned or managed by BT, enabling it to supply better value services – such as 8Mb download speeds for £40. The coverage for this supercharged speed currently only reaches 18 per cent of the UK and you can check whether you’re in the running for it by entering your details into the availability checker on the UK Online web site.

If things continue along recent lines, such as the cable speed increases and this announcement, the UK may actually be able to claim to be the technology leader it thinks it is.
