7Digital Launches Windows Phone 7 App

In just 12 months, the percent of 7digital’s sales from mobile devices has gone from one per cent to 44 per cent and in a bid to continue that growth, it has launched an app for Window Phone 7.

The app, which will only work with the latest version of the OS, namely Windows Phone 7.5 or Mango, will give users access to 7digital’s library of 17 million tracks and will let them listen to 30 to 90 second previews of the tracks they may want to buy. Tracks downloaded using the service will be done so in a lower quality format when using a cellular network, but users will then be able to download higher quality MP3 320kbps quality files when they are connected to Wi-Fi.

At the launch in London, CEO Ben Drury said: “We’re continuing to see demand from customers for access to their music on all their devices, regardless of the manufacturer or operating system. With the launch of our Windows Phone app, we’re continuing to work towards the realisation of our vision to provide anytime anywhere access to music for customers.”

The service, which began offering lossless FLAC downloads earlier this year, has 3 million registered customers but only 30 per cent of these are active, Drury confirmed.

As well as expanding onto the WP7 platform in 2012, the company is working with a wide range of companies to preinstall the service on products, including 55 different Samsung products in 2012.
