Samsung has released a Samsung Galaxy S5 with a QHD display, but only in its native South Korea.
We’ve been expecting a Samsung Galaxy S5 variant with souped up components, including a QHD display, for some time now. We’ve often referred to it as the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime.
Whether this latest domestic model is that handset or not, it shows that Samsung is gearing up for a wider shift to the Ultra High Definition display standard in its top-end smartphones.
Over on the official Samsung Tomorrow Flickr account, Samsung has revealed what it’s calling the Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A.
As the name suggests, the handset supports the LTE Advanced network standard, which provides staggeringly fast download speeds of up to 225Mbps. Yikes.
But of more interest to us here in the West is the rest of the Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A’s specs. It features a 5.1-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. For all you pixel counters, that means 577 pixels per inch (PPI).
It’s the first Samsung smartphone to sport such a display, so this is pretty big news regardless of the limited release.
The new components don’t end there either. In order to push all those extra pixels around, the Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A comes with a quad-core Snapdragon 805 CPU, which is a step up from the standard Galaxy S5’s Snapdragon 801.
This is backed by 3GB of RAM, which represents a 50 percent bump up.
Hopefully we’ll see this handset making its way west in short order. We have a pretty good idea that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will feature a 5.7-inch QHD display and a Snapdragon 805 CPU, but that’s not set to launch until September.
