40GB PS3 Providing Sales Boost

Or are people rushing to get a 60GB model while they can?

Sony is no doubt very pleased to hear the sales figures for the week following the release of its cheaper, 40GB console. Taken at face value, the new SKU has tripled sales over several prior weeks.

Specifically, before the release of the new model sales were roughly around 6,000 a week, while last week over 18,000 of the things were shifted. In the same period, Xbox 360 sales dropped off from about 23,000 to 17,000 units. Wii sales remained higher, around 23,000 units, and the DS is beating the PS3 and Xbox combined with over 46,000 units sold – it’s still a good time to be Nintendo.

Of course, because of the way VGChartz (yes, that is a ‘Z’ alas) measures its numbers, we can’t tell whether or not the increase is due to people rushing out to buy the new model or, as I rather suspect, people snapping up the less crippled 60GB model while they still can.

Either way, sales are picking up and all Sony needs to do now is sustain them by releasing some decent games. On which note, Clive Barker’s Jericho and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction are both released next Friday – both of which look promising.
