Apple nabs original comedy from ‘Always Sunny’ duo Mac & Charlie
Apple has reportedly added to its growing array of forthcoming original video content by commissioning a new comedy series from the stars and creators of the cult sitcom It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day will again team-up as writers, producers and stars of the show about working at a video game development studio, Variety reports. The unannounced show is yet to have a title, the sources say, but Apple was suitably impressed to go ‘straight-to-series’ without piloting the half-hour scripted comedy.
Interestingly, the report says, French game studio Ubisoft is also on board as an executive producer, seemingly to provide expertise and real world insight into life in a gaming studio.
Nothing is known about the planned air date for the show, which will join the likes of CarPool Karaoke amid Apple’s $1 billion splurge on original video content.

McElhenney and Day, who play Paddy’s Pub owners Mac and Charlie, are also gearing up for the Season 13 of ‘Always Sunny’, which airs in the US on FXX next month. The long-running show is commissioned for one more season, with ‘The Gang’ hoping to break the record for the longest-running live-action sitcom in US TV history. That is currently held by The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet at 14 seasons.
Speaking of ‘Always Sunny’, The Gang Goes Mobile video game will launch next month alongside the start of the new season.
It appears the game will be centred around a scheme to help Frank launder money with help from the gang. The description reads: “Frank’s come into a bunch of dirty money he needs to hide from the feds, so he recruits The Gang to do his dirty work. While Mac, Dennis, and Dee bicker and backstab over laundering schemes, Frank tasks Charlie with hiding the clean cash in a safe place.”
McElhenney was also scheduled to be writing and directing the Minecraft movie, but confirmed this week he has left the project.
