2nd Palm WebOS Handset Due In 2009

Could the Pre get a stable mate much sooner than anyone expected?

If you’ve been waiting anxiously for the arrival of the Palm Pre you may now face a new dilemma…

In short: it looks like the Pre will be just the first of ”two” WebOS based Palm handsets due out in 2009. According to “one of our better sources” TechCrunch claims Palm is “very far along” with a second model which could be ready as soon as the autumn.

The new handset would be far too soon to be seen as a second generation device but instead will be a smaller addition, potentially without the physical keyboard – something which would put it head on with the likes of the iPhone 3G, HTC Magic and Samsung I7500. Naturally, as with the iPhone lite, I think caution is wise here though Palm has shown fairly lax security in the past when it comes to keeping new models a secret. TechCrunch also got the scoop on the Palm Pre just before its original announcement at CES which adds some credibility.

Personally though I’d say 2010 is far more likely for a second WebOS phone. Against this, Palm is simply porting software so who is to say it can’t chuck them out like hot cakes? With its recent financial results it may have to…
