Amazing us on an otherwise sleepy UK Bank Holiday afternoon is the Korean giant’s announcement that it has manufactured a 256GB SSD that not only operates with record breaking 200MBps and 160MBps read/write speeds but that it does this from a Multi-Level Cell (MLC) base.
”What?” I hear you cry. Well listen up because this is a biggie: Traditionally manufacturers have been stuck with the Single Level Cell (SLC) approach whereby capacities only increase when a single, large (and therefore hugely expensive) slab of flash memory is employed. By contrast, MLC technology means using multiple smaller (and cheaper) flash modules together to create much larger storage capacities. The approach had been tried in the past but until now inefficiencies meant the performance drop-offs were so great that it wasn’t a viable option.
If you still aren’t getting it, try this: Much larger and cheaper SSDs are on the horizon with no performance sacrifices whatsoever.
“With development of the 256GB SSD, the notebook PC is on the brink of a second stage of evolution,” said Jim Elliott, Samsung’s VP of Memory Marketing. “This change is comparable to the evolution from the Sony Walkman to NAND memory-based MP3 players, representing an initial step in the shift to thinner, smaller SSD-based notebooks with significantly improved performance and more than ample storage.”
Samples of 2.5in SATA II editions of the 100.3 x 69.85 x 9.5mm drive will begin appearing in September with mass production before the end of the year. A 1.8in version of the 256GBer will also launch in Q4.
