If the tube strike has you wanting to leave motorised transport altogether, the Barclays ‘Boris’ bike scheme is something you can lean on. There are more than 700 cycle ‘stations’ in London.

The issue are knowing whether there are any bikes available at your nearest station, and if there’s any space to dock the thing once you’ve finished. And, you guessed it, there’s an app that does just that.

Barclays offers its own app, but we prefer the Cycle Hire app for iPhone. It shows a map that displays all the nearest Barclays Bike stations, and has a little dial for each, showing how full they are. Simple is best. And this one is very simple. It costs 69p.

For Android users, London Cycle Hire does the same thing and costs 75p.
