Best overall sat nav app

Key features:

  • Cleanest interface with great dashboard when driving
  • Best availability (versions for Amazon Fire, Android, iOS & Windows Phone)
  • Great value at just half the price of other paid-for apps (TomTom & Garmin)

While CoPilot isn’t known for its hardware like TomTom and Garmin are, its sat nav app is really slick. The app gives you two options when you open it: view map or enter new destination. The menu is really bright and uncluttered, though it lacks a search bar, so you have to select the type of destination before getting route guidance.

The maps are stored on the device, which means you’ll never struggle for directions when you don’t have any signal. The app takes up a tiny amount of space on your phone, and you then decide which maps you’d like to install – UK & Ireland maps take up 418MB. CoPilot also enables you to navigate to somewhere you took a photo on your phone. While this feature won’t be useful every day, it’s one of many clever functions on offer, such as the option to play your music and control it within the app.

Other features include free traffic for 12 months, three alternative routes to your destination, lane guidance, which are all included as standard. Upgrades include 12 months’ traffic for £6.99 and additional maps starting from £6.99.

Aside from making it really easy to input your destination, CoPilot provides other great usability, with the app recognising your daily drive to work, learning your usual route and checking it for traffic. There’s also the option to navigate to a place just by clicking on the map, and the offline point-of-interest database is incredibly accurate.

The best bit about CoPilot is the way the map and surrounding icons sit on the screen. Everything is intuitive rather than distracting – even the speed camera warnings, which are included and come with free database updates.

Like Garmin, CoPilot includes multi-stop trip planning, route optimisation and drag-and-drop itinerary editing, plus easy access to home, work, favourite and recent destinations. You can also pull up motorcycle guidance, walking directions, bicycle routes, plus the option to avoid low bridges if you’re driving something a little bigger than a car.
