Otterbox Defender

6 of 8

A company renowned for its rugged cases, the Ottobox Defender is built to offer dust, drop and scratch protection for the S5. The downside is that it’s a bit of a plastic brick to carry around. The three-part construction is made up of a screen protector, a polycarbonate inner with a soft, inner to help absorb impact from drop. The case is completed by a silicone outer with an optional belt holster that snap onto the corners if you think you can still pull off that look.

As a protective case, this is a about as comprehensive as you get. The latches that connect the inner to the screen protector are very secure and should keep dust and debris away from your phone. Pressing and navigating the touchscreen through the protector is very responsive, although you will need to give it a good clean. The Defender does, however, pose issues with some of the S5’s key features. It’s very difficult to use the fingerprint sensor, while the volume rocker and standby buttons are difficult to get to. It’s quite uncomfortable to take out of your pocket due to the latches around the edges of the case.

The Defender covers most bases for rugged protection apart from waterproofing, but if you want to make best use of all of the S5’s features, it’s going to be one to give a miss.
