What is iA Writer?
This is the app you need if you want to do a bit of writing or note-taking on your phone, but don’t want to be distracted by anything. It’s a very smart, intensely simple writing app that basically turns your iPhone into a notepad. Or the blank page of a typewriter, if that’s more your style.
iA Writer is unusual in that it takes the opposite approach to most other apps. It’s not trying to convince you apps need to be flashy and obviously 24/7 connected to be relevant.
There’s some of that cleverness going on behind the scenes, though. iA Writer is also available for iPads and Macs, and your documents are sync’d across devices, letting you, for example, write on your MacBook and then edit/proofread on your iPhone.
Thanks to the simple, automatic formatting iA Writer applies, everything remains clear no matter what platform you use. And it fills the screen with the edit window, pretty much forcing you to concentrate.
That’s the order of the day here, and iA Writer removes all customisation options so you can’t faff around with unimportant side concerns. It all about the content. That’s it.
Take a good look at iA Writer’s screenshots, because if you hate the way it looks, there’s not much you can do about it. The font and layout style are enforced, because that’s part of the whole point.
The font is also quite unlike anything you’d see online or printed in a book. It’s very much a text editor font. No frills.
Its export options also aren’t as as wide as you might like. However, you can spit out docx files, which should suit most people’s needs pretty well.
