With stiff competition from Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions, the original toys-to-life series needed a seriously good twist to stay in the game. It found it in Skylanders Superchargers, pairing a new range of figurines with a new range of toy vehicles, the right Skylander and the right vehicle making one killer supercharged combination. It’s a twist that makes Superchargers hard to resist, particularly once the action veers away from the tried-and-tested platforming and combat to take in Starfox-style shoot-em-ups and racing both on tracks and – with the boats – both on and under the water.
The result? A thrilling adventure that kids can enjoy on their own or team up with family and friends to play, upgrading both their Skylanders and their vehicles to make them tougher, faster and generally cooler. And while the cost of figures and vehicles can mount up – and you really can’t finish the game properly without some extras – you get a fantastic split-screen and online racing mode thrown in. This might not be the best ever Skylanders, but the series isn’t running out of steam.
At time of review Skylanders SuperChargers was available for £27.99.
