What is Hobbi? Facebook has launched a new social media app

Need more Facebook-owned apps in your life? No? Well, the social media behemoth disagrees, and has now launched Hobbi, a visual social media platform with a focus on “your creative process”.

The app was built by Facebook’s NPE (New Product Experimentation) team. It’s reminiscent of Pinterest in many ways and encourages users to practice, develop and share their hobbies.

The immediate example the app gives is using a pottery wheel, but we can see how Hobbi could cater to plenty of different pursuits. Expect cooking, fitness, arts and crafts, gardening, and much much more. Any hobby with a visual element can be effectively shared and discussed on Hobbi.

If you’re an Android user you’ll have to wait for this one, as currently it’s only available on iOS devices. It’s likely that the app will remain solely on the App Store for a short while, while the last issues are ironed out, but barring a major mishap we expect it make its way to Android phones soon.

This release comes hot on the heels of another Facebook app release, called Whale. The Whale app allows users to quickly create and share memes across social media. The company quietly brought that application out at the end of last year.

These two releases, coming in fairly quick succession, show that Facebook is still keen to grow even further. However, it’s nothing new and the company has been known to float new apps and ideas from time to time. At this stage there’s no guarantee either of these will survive for long.

If they catch on though, we’re sure to see them develop further. Already we can see Hobbi being more successful than Whale, simply because it seems like an easier market to target. However, both apps face a lot of competition.
