What is an IP address?

An IP address is a unique string of numbers that is assigned to any device connected to the internet by its network or internet service provider (ISP). They usually appear as four numbers between one and three digits long, separated by periods (for example, 192.168.1.1), but can be much longer in the case of IPv6 addresses.

The ‘IP’ in IP address stands for ‘internet protocol’.

IP addresses are typically assigned automatically by your ISP. However, if you’re using an older router or modem, you may be required to configure your IP address manually.

You can check your own IP address at any time by heading into your Windows Network & Internet settings, choosing Wi-Fi or Ethernet and looking under Properties. If you’re a Mac user, you can find your IP address by diving into your System Settings, clicking Wi-Fi or Ethernet and selecting Details.

You can also find your IP address on iOS and Android devices by heading into your Wi-Fi settings and clicking either the information icon or the gear icon next to your network, depending on your OS.

What is an IP address for?

The main purpose of an IP address is to identify the devices connected to a network. An IP address functions similarly to a street address or phone number, allowing internet traffic to be routed the right way.

Not only does your IP address enable devices on the same network to communicate (for example, your phone and TV when you use Chromecast), but it also helps to differentiate your device from others in the vicinity.

Can you hide your IP address?

However, for all of the above to happen, IP addresses must contain geolocation information. Unfortunately, this is data that can be exploited by both cybercriminals and law enforcement.

This is where a VPN comes in. VPNs – or Virtual Private Networks – can be used to encrypt your internet traffic, disguising your IP address and veiling your location from snooping eyes as you surf the web.
