Xerox Phaser 3320V/DNI - Performance

Xerox rates the Phaser 3320VDNI at 35 pages per minute (ppm), which is a bit ambitious, even though it's a fast printer for the money. Our five-page text test gave a speed of 15ppm, though this increased to 25ppm on the 20-page document. Duplex print is standard and our 20-page test printed as 10 duplex pages gave a speed of 14.6 sides per minute.

These are all very respectable speeds and, even when shared between several people, shouldn't force too many water-cooler moments, while waiting for print jobs to complete. The five-page text and graphics job gave 15.8ppm and a 15 x 10cm photo printed on A4 took just 10 seconds, in the printer’s enhanced 1200dpi, best print mode.
Xerox Phaser 3320V/DNI - Tray
Perhaps because of its long history with photocopiers and printers, the output quality from this machine is to the usual high standard Xerox achieves. Text print is sharp and clean and the default 600dpi output is sufficient to remove any jagged edges.

The machine has several eco-features, including toner save, multiple pages per sheet, a fairly aggressive default sleep-mode timer and duplex print. Combined together where documents allow, you can make useful savings on power and toner usage.

Greyscale graphics are well reproduced, with little signs of blotchiness in areas of fill and enough grey shades to reproduce a good range of colours uniquely. Our photo test print did well in lighter areas, though some detail was lost in the shadows.

The Xerox Phaser 3320V/DNI is quite noisy, peaking at 65dBA when feeding sheets, though noise and speed often rise in proportion in faster printers.
Xerox Phaser 3320V/DNI - Cartridge
If you buy the high yield consumable cartridge, page costs come out at 1.5p, including 0.7p for paper. This is a very good page rate, for a machine available at just over £200. With toner and drum in the same cartridge, maintenance costs are also kept to a minimum.

Verdict

The Xerox Phaser 3320V/DNI is an excellent small business and workgroup mono laser printer. It's fast (though not quite as fast as Xerox claims), produces sharp, clean prints and is very cheap to run. A couple of minor niggles on the wireless setup and menu layout don't detract from what is essentially a high value piece of office equipment.
