Officially unveiled at CES 2013, the Withings Smart Activity Tracker is the latest addition to the ever growing collection of personal health and wellbeing monitoring portable gadgets.

Building on the company’s collection of wellbeing tracking tech, that includes the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale and the Withings Blood Pressure Monitor, the Withings Smart Activity Tracker looks set to give the likes of Nike and FitBit a run for their respective monies when launched to the public at the “end of Q1 2013.”

Withings Smart Activity Tracker Design

Similar in size to the FitBit One, the Withings Smart Activity Tracker is compact in design with the unit’s rounded edged plastic form construction measuring in at a mere 8.3mm thick and just 43.3mm in length. Although an exact weight for the device is not given, during out hands-on with the product, we were surprised at just how light the device was.

Whilst this light weight will help ensure a comfortable, unobtrusive introduction into your daily lives, on first impressions the Withings Smart Activity Tracker feels, if anything, a little too light with the almost farcically low mass meaning the device is uncomfortably light and a seeming sure-fire candidate to be easy lost, misplaced or forgotten.

Offering little in terms of frills, the Withings Smart Activity Tracker is on basic, gloss black plastic design with the unit’s body hosting just a single physical button. Allowing users to skip between data metric menus, the solitary physical button is marginally too small for comfort, sitting almost flush with the device’s top edge and causing unwanted faff in use.

Allowing users to keep tabs on their fitness regimes and data feedback, the Withings Smart Activity Tracker plays host to a small but impressive OLED touchscreen display.

Offering up details in an unspoilt, untarnished vibrant blue hue, all content is easy and comfortable to read with the well spaced characters ensuring there is little in terms of confusion or second glance guesswork.

Whilst the display itself is not of a full touchscreen ilk, the Withings Smart Activity Tracker does, however, play host to a touch-sensitive strip which sits just below the screen and which offers users an alternative, and more natural, means of negotiating menus,

Withings Smart Activity Tracker Pulse Measurer

A new and quirky addition for such a compact, self-worn personal trainer, the  Withings Smart Activity, which is small and more user friendly that its Nike FuelBand rival, touts an integrated pulse monitor allowing users to measure their pulse and gain a more well rounded fitness profile.

Sitting on the device’s rear, the Withings Smart Activity Tracker pulse measurer largely resembles the fingerprint scanner found on many current high-end laptops save, instead of allowing access to content, the single finger reader provides health details regarding your pulse.

Whilst in practise this feature worked and offered results roughly around the expected figures, in practise it is far from idea with the processes of reading your pulse taking more than a considerable amount of time with a full reading easily pushing the minute mark.

Withings Smart Activity Tracker Features

Far from a one trick pony, the Withings Smart Activity Tracker also plays host to the usual collection of features with the collection of integrated accelerometers allowing users to receive and review the number of steps taken, strides run, total distance covered, calories burned and sleep quality checked.
