It might not be cheap, but the Garmin Forerunner 405 is a powerful training device. Not only does it use GPS to track distance and log movement against time, but it can pair to accessories such as a heart-rate monitor to provide a wealth of data. The bundled software is good, and can overlay your route on Google Maps, where you can analyse your performance over differing terrain. Lukeotron - you can set the data to rotate, so it will show you each data item for a set period of time and then move on to the next one. If you do this you can lock the bezel and... more

I would recommend you leave it plugged in and charging when not in use. That way it will always be 100% when you need it.
