I had a spare month for Fallout 3 (I was recovering from surgery) and I spent more than 200 hours in that game and I still haven't seen it all. The only reason I'm not playing it now is that I'm holding back some of the stuff I haven't done for a new character to go with the new downloadable content comming up.

This is IMO the best top10 list this year.
The first place for me is fable 2 aswell :)

My top game in 2008 is Farcry 2.
And I find it strange that you even fail to mention it anywhere.
It was easily, one of the more innovative, realistic and addictive games of 2008 for me.
I fully agree with the inclusion of Crysis Warhead and Race Driver GRID,
but the omission of Farcry 2 is inexcusable as I see it.

Good heavens! MGS4 not even in the top 10? For me, that and GTA were unmatched in terms of scope and execution with no major flaws, and are the first games in my view to truly blur that game/movie line (BTW MGS4 was the first I had played in the series, and it was pretty confusing at times, so I guess it isn't for everyone). It was full of neat little touches like the retro MGS1 sequence, and the final set-piece atop the submarine was one of the most thrilling game finales ever (if very frustrating!). I think Dead Space may even have crept into my top 10 list, I thought it was one of the freshest games of the year with and interesting plot and backstory, even though I am not the biggest survival horror fan and I did dread putting it in my PS3 and firing it up (always a clean pair of underwear at the ready!). Burnout Paradise should be up there just for the sheer amount of extra content Criterion have developed and delivered for free after the games initial release (which already pretty good). This is a line I'd like to see all developers and publishers take and I think Criterion deserves a pat on the back for being the first to show the others the way when everyone else is charging through the nose for small bits of extra in-game content (let alone game-changing content). EA is particularly bad at doing this with most of their games (£15 for an extra course in Tiger Woods!) and I know, I know, Burnout Paradise was published by EA so I don't know how that works. And as for Fable II getting top spot, I'm not an RPG fan or 360 owner so I can't comment! GoW2 is the one game I do wish I owned one for though!

I played Crysis Warhead but it felt rather hollow to me. It felt like a call of duty-style game but without the storyline, these wonderful set-piece fights you fought without knowing why.
But conspiciously missing from your list is Mount and Blade. It certainly had it's flaws, but it was a awful lot of fun; more so than Crysis Warhead.
I've also been having fun with The Witcher Enhanced Edition, Mass Effect PC and X3:Terran Conflict.

I thought World of Goo deserved a look-in. I don't think TR reviewed it though? It's the only game I've finished this year, and was well worth the effort.

It's interesting that the only game that someone has a really strong opinion about is the one that has most divided opinion, at least in the people I've talked to. I personally thought Far Cry 2 was not only massively overated but in fact pretty awful. After having played about 20houra of it I can't recall a single moment where I felt excited, empathetic, amused, joyous, sad, or scared. In other words, it's boring. Admitedly I'm still drawn to completing it, but that's because I hate to abandon anything that I've started. Looking back, I should've trusted my instincts and ditched it after playing the first hour or so and not enjoying it.

I'm with you on most of the choices; Fallout 3, Gears 2, LBP etc... but Metal Gear Solid 4 would definitely have been in my Top 10 (Crysis wouldn't). It was my first MGS game but I still got drawn into the story and couldn't stop playing it.
And if MGS4 is only an Honourable Mention then no way does Burnout Paradise belong in that same category... yes Paradise is fun but got boring quickly, extra content or not - although I'd still be playing it today if only they'd included SPLIT SCREEN! Very silly, Criterion...
As for Far Cry 2, I'm with Ed. FC2 looked really impressive when I saw someone else playing it - but after getting it myself, I quickly lost interest in the story and became frustrated by the gameplay. I gave up long before completing it and have no intention of going back.
Finally I do like Left 4 Dead, and agree it's one of the year's best games... but I was expecting more; to me it feels like a Half Life mod that could have been released a few years back. Admittedly, in a game with friends it's great, but I can't help thinking it could have been even better.

Call of Duty 5 is my best game of the year! The online is second to none!
I really enjoyed GTAIV and am looking forward to the extra story next year.
Crysis was also very good, I was completely blown away with the graphics and physics even if the story was a bit lame.
Im not really a fan of Gear of war, I didn't really like the first one but if the 2nd one is much better, I may be tempted to buy it if I see a bargain.

Dont agree with alot of this list. Grid has to be the worst driving game of 08, after playing GT5 there is no comparison. LBP gets boring quickly if you dont design your own levels and the generic gameplay gets repetitive quickly.
And Metal Gear Solid 4 probably the best game there dosent even get on the list, that unforgivable.

Ed, I can see how you and others could Far Cry 2 boring - it's long, unstructured and gives you nothing without a lot of effort. But the pay-off on a bit of imagination and patience is enormous.
I've thoroughly enjoyed GTA4, Fallout3 and Prince of Persia this year, but I played none as constantly or obsessively as I did Far Cry 2. I even pulled a sickie to keep on playing it.
I found it gave me a blank canvas and a rich set of tools with which to create my own action and tell my own story. I set up my own ambushes, played at being Rambo with a daylight assault or went all James Bond with a night-time in-and-out incursion. I loved the weapons, the fire, the AI, but most of all I loved the world and how it reacted to my decisions.
It wasn't perfect, but it sucked me in like no other. Ed, you say it gave you no special moments. It gave me more than any other game this year. But perhaps that's because it gave me the space to create my own special moments. And the fact that they were my own made them all the more satisfying.

why did fable 2 get ranked no1 it was rated 8.5 on gamespot, gta iv and fallout 3 are defiantly my best games for 2008.

@journeyman1984 - errrrr... you're going to have to take a leapt of faith on this one: we're NOT Gamespot! ;)

No way Fable should have gotten the top spot although it was an ok game it was a very watered down mediocre RPG for the casual gamer generation.
The Witcher Enhanced Edition and Gothic series show Fable for what it really is, a kiddies RPG.

I'm a little bit suspicious that the whingers here are all harping on about the games they bought and played, and panning those they never did just read some reviews on which were critical.
Though not being a gamer I don't really give a rats arse.
Greg said on 30th December 2008
People panning games they haven't bought, and praising the ones they have...
The horror.
AJ said on 6th January 2009
Seems odd that there's no mention of Wrath of the Lich King here.
I'll bet that more people have spent more hours playing that game than all the rest of the above put together.

For me it'd have to be GTA. I really thought that the formula had started to get a bit long in the tooth but I couldn't have been more wrong. The level of detail was just stunning and the scale is amazing. There were so many classic moments and I'm still discovering new things after all this time.
Gears runs it close though. The campaign's good but Horde is like a drug.
