Got the game at 12 and wow amazing. This release was soo big even my local bp petrol station had copies! convenient cos it just across the road and there were no queues at all.

Thats funny, I could have sworn I just enjoyed the hell out of the first 4 levels of the PC version.
ilovethemonkeyhead said on 10th November 2009
did they really have to release it on remembrance day, just for the sake of having a date that says " 11, 10, 09"?
especially considering the uk format is "10, 11, 09", they should have released the game last month.

I cancelled my pre-order on Amazon once I found out that on the PC version, it's not just that user operated dedicated servers aren't supported, there aren't even any official ones! All multiplayer games are locally hosted by one of the players.

I'm sure the single player game will be fantastic, as all the Infinity Ward ones have been before, but I'm happy to wait until I can pick up a copy of the game going cheap. It's not like I'll be missing out on a frenzy of online action! CoD4:MW multiplayer is still going strong.

@ilovethemonkeyhead - I thought remembrance day was the 11th November?

Or it could have even been the 8th.. :)

I got mine delivered yesterday from Game and played it a good few hours last night - loving it so far. I think it's a case of if you liked COD4 you're pretty much guaranteed to like this too as it's more of the same.
Interested to read TR's opinion of the game though. You guys playing it yet?
noTHINGface said on 10th November 2009
I cancelled my pre-order the other day. I'm not willing to pay a premium for this since they ruined the PC version. Shame. I'll consider grabbing later.

Honestly got my 250GB xbox at around 00:30, and the multiplayer so far is awesome, Can see this being more addictive that CDO4. Great time for people to who have never played to start, Everyone is starting pretty much from scratch. Maps are really well done with lots of vertical play. I would give it a full 10/10.
drdark said on 10th November 2009
@Xiphis: according to IGN, around 4.5 hours...
@BobaFett: I think the multiplayer's 9vs9 max too.
Anyway, due to some of the things mentioned above and other stuff which has led me to wish Activision and Infinity Ward to rot in hell, this is the only thing which comes to mind when someone says "Modern Warfare 2" these days (and there's a lot of the buggers):
" Never before in the history of the world had such a mass of human beings moved and suffered together. This was not a disciplined march – it was a stampede – without order and without a goal, six million people unarmed and unprovisioned, driving headlong. It was the beginning of the rout of civilization, of the massacre of mankind."
BobaFett said on 10th November 2009
@drdark: yes as per the interview with Infinity Ward developers in the link I sent earlier, it is 9v9 max (not sure how viable that is on most people's home broadband) and the host is auto-selected (based on upload bandwidth I presume) and if they decide to quit, it takes 5 seconds to migrate the game to another host. I assume this also happens if there's a sudden drop in upload bandwidth, such as when a household member of the hoster initiates a Skype video call.
Unfortunately us PC gamers can protest all we like, the bottom line is that there's much more money to be made on the consoles. I just hope Valve never sells out like that.

I'm actually looking forward to L4D2 more; I'll give this a miss for now, particularly as they've hobbled the PC version.
I'm surprised that Valve's release date for L4D2 is so close, I'd have thought most publishers would make sure their release dates were months away from this...
hank said on 10th November 2009
@bobafett
Absolute zombie nonsense, Valve would love the bucks that this franchise makes and would ditch the PC platform in an instance. The are only faithful because of steam the investment they put into it and its digital distrubution share of the market.
Many L4D said they sold out too with L4D2, that boycott lost its legs, it didn't have that many and so has this latest debacle. In piracy terms who can blame developers and publishers having the choice of what platform they deem best to release their product.
Internet petitions and whining only works when your argument is valid & worthwhile, most people will have bought the game on console, are enjoying the game leaving a small mob of trolls on the internet sobbing into keyboards. Let's face it if you posess 100% non pirated software on your computer you are now very much a minority and that is why IW does not love you.
MrGodfrey said on 10th November 2009
Have just finished it on PS3; the single-player was as entertaining (but as short) as I expected. Sadly the excellent voice work was ruined by terrible dialogue; some characters' monologues in this are truly awful. I mean really, really terrible; utter nonsensical drivel which was presumably meant to sound profound. I don't think I'm nitpicking here; play the game and you will see what I mean.
Spec-Ops two-player mode is fantastic fun, and obviously the multiplayer is excellent. But why, why oh why do we now have to send party invites via the main PS3 Friends menu? This is needlessly complicated and results in message spam; the previous system where invites were built into the game made much more sense.
It's still definitely worth buying, but I do get the feeling it was somewhat rushed. I look forward to TR's full review.

@hank
That's an extremely naive point of view. Companies like Activision would have you believe that everyone who owns a PC is automatically a pirate, and they've obviously managed to pull to wool over your eyes if you believe that drivel. The console markets are indeed larger by comparison to the PC, but that doesn't mean it's small and the profit margins are pretty much the same thanks to the console tax. COD4 sold over a million copies on the PC, which is hardly a figure to be sniffed at. A developer would have to be insane to drop a whole platform worth of sales for such a popular title when it's guaranteed sales, regardless of piracy. Even with homogenised, consolified ports like this, if you have a PC capable of running the game, then the PC version is still a better choice than the console version.

Hi,
I got it at 12:00 from blockbusters. Yes its good. But Its nowhere near as good as uncharted 2. Am I a fanboy?...certainly not, I have a PS3 and an XBox. I bought MW2 on XBox as I think XBox live is better for this type of game....just an opinion....UC2 rules!

Ruined? Oh please.
9v9 multiplayer is fine. Stop whining.
Mik3yB said on 11th November 2009
@ Sleeper
On the 360 Halo 3 is 8v8 and Gears 2 is 5v5 - and I think both are great, so I agree 9v9 is fine for Modern Warefare 2 if the maps are similar sizes to COD4 (it was 8v8 if I remember correctly..)
At the end of the day, if you can have fun with plenty of your mates in the same game it's all peachy..
Jones said on 11th November 2009
Not too fussed about this one to be honest. After the massive disappointment of Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 I dont think I'll ever let myself get hyped up over a FPS again. Ive been playing them since the old Wolfenstein days and nothing seems new or exciting anymore. I've obviously been saturated by FPSs!
What I will say is that I was a COD1 die hard. Obsessed over that one a lot and after playing CODMW1 a little I just realised it was COD1 with prettier graphics, nothing more, and put it down and never touched it again.
I dont mean to kick up a stink, Im sure plenty will love the game as much as I loved the very first one (is that 6 years ago now?).
Gordon said on 11th November 2009
@Jones - I'm with you on COD1, one of my favourite games of all time and it's hard to ever beat the impact that had on first play. That said, I do believe the Modern Warfare series stands up to it.
The shock at how good MW1 was isn't there with MW2 as it is now expected, but it has had me laugh out loud with joy and excitement on numerous occasions so far so I'd try and put aside the cynicism - it's worth it!
betelgeus said on 11th November 2009
got it today on pc,cant even describe how disappointed i am.the single player is a chore to play(i had to check the cover art just incase they had sent me modern warfare 1 by mistake).just plain bored after 5 minutes dragged it out to about 2 hours but no i just got more boring.
cant even get online, cod 2 is still more fun than this.probably the most overrated game ever(if you can call it a game that is).
back to uncharted 2 for me.
Gordon said on 12th November 2009
@betelgeus - doesn't sound like any of the feedback I'd heard to date, though the PC version has come under great scrutiny. We were handed out the Xbox edition however and - despite my preference for a keyboard and mouse - that has been phenomenal.
betelgeus said on 12th November 2009
well first up the engine is looking dated after 2 years with no destructible objects, its even more linear than ever and the campaign lasts 4 hours.I wouldnt mind all this as i buy cod on pc for multiplayer, where we used to have dedicated servers run 32v32 now the games are hosted on the players own pc with max 9v9 plus the host has a ping of 0ms whilst eeryone else has a ping of 200ms+,bsically the multiplayer is broken on pc so your paying £35 for 4 hours of outdated been there before gameplay.
Gordon said on 12th November 2009
@betelgeus - that's not accurate I'm afraid, virtually everything can be destroyed in the game other than walls. Linear I don't mind if it's compelling, which I certainly find MW2 to be. The PC version does seem to be the ugly ducking however which is a great shame.
Indy said on 13th November 2009
Its good, but I would be miffed if this beats uncharted 2 in game of the year....UC2 beats this hands down. 26+ chapters to play through, graphics are 2x MW2, great story...amazing set pieces...and you have to play a touch battle on on-line "plunder" to be hooked forever....
betelgeus said on 13th November 2009
it probably will win goty, goty is like the films that win 9 oscars that nobody likes, there are 2 types of gamers a)like mgs4,fallout 3,killzone 2.b) like uc2 batman resi 5.mgs4 won goty of the decade from most people,i rented it and even bought it twice incase i missed something that everyone else got.fallout 3 was tear inducing, smash my monitor in banality fromthe 1st minute.
uc2 feels right ass you play it same as arkaham and resi 5(hard to explain),sort of like most zelda games just feel right.
this game does get good in rio and later but reviewers rave about th snowski part(it is good but lasts about 14 seconds).one reviewer raved about the bit in the begining using the gattling onboard? i think that lasted even less time.
lets just hope when actiw make enough money they open it up to the public, the game is hacked already theyve more than covered piracy costs plus private servers cost them nothing.
Steve32 said on 13th November 2009
Just finished on Veteran - took me 11 hours. You would have to be god to do it in 4 hours at that level I feel! If you are doing it in 4 hours then up the difficulty level! But, it was easier that COD4 on Veteran though.
Destructable: Gordom, betelgeus - sorry, disagree with both of you! Things certainly are destrucible but "virtually everything" - try playing Battlefield Bad Company before saying that. Compared to Battlefield it is quite disappointing and I agree that the engine is showing it's age. The backgrounds are often really low resolution and look pretty awful.
Overall I have really enjoyed the Campaign. It is very much more of the same with hardly any innovation. Special Ops is good fun. Not a huge fan of the multiplayer as I just guess bashed, but again, it seems more of the same.
Can't comment on the PC version as I gave up on PC gaming a while ago.
