Xbox 360 Update Will Block Unauthorised Memory Units

Looking forward to the next Xbox 360 update? You may want to think twice about installing it...
Speaking on his blog Xbox Live's Major Nelson proclaimed: "When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you've moved your profile or saved games onto one to 'back it up,' you'd better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games."

Let that be a (frustrating) warning, especially since tasty updates such as Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm integration look likely to be present. Zune Video Marketplace will also make an appearance, but it seems doubtful whether that will be available to European users at present.
To be fair to Microsoft the trade in unauthorised Memory units isn't particularly widespread, that said I'd be more sympathetic to this move if the company would stop placing crazy price premiums on Xbox storage. For example, £129.99 RRP for an official Xbox 360 120GB HDD?! I can pay a tenner more for a 3.5in two terabyte drive. Sort it out Microsoft!

I don't have either console, but multi-platform releases are usually superior on the 360, as DigitalFoundry comparisons on Eurogamer repeatedly show.
