You may recall a while back Sony improved the CPU in its PSP form 222MHz to 333MHz and, as the 50 per cent speed increase might suggest, it lent a few developers a second wind. So imagine the excitement arising from Sony Insider's discovery that the PSP Go has a CPU with a potential maximum clock speed of 480MHz.

Don't go getting too excited yet, though. It's likely that the CPU speed is currently limited to 333MHz in the PSP Go's firmware, keeping its performance in line with the older model. However, there's nothing stopping Sony from changing that in the future should it want to push some even fancier games onto the platform. It may be possible that individual applications might be able to up the CPU speed if needed; who knows? Well, aside from Sony, for now.

For now, then, you're still going to want to focus on the high price, lack of a UMD drive and the new styling of the PSP Go when making a purchase decision. Those of us waiting to see what happens now have one more potential box to be checked - alongside some new, compelling games, perhaps? - before we'll be tempted to upgrade from out perfectly serviceable first-generation PSPs.

Update:
SCE says the 480MHz clock speed is for the PSP Go's USB ports. Damn!
